This has been the first year of your life when you have lived on your own more than at home with us. You're halfway through your second year of college (halfway through college, you overachiever), and it's been so cool to watch you grow and find your way independently of us. You've found great friends at school, you've settled into your majors and made relationships with classmates and professors, you've jumped into opportunities to be involved, and you've navigated the responsibilities of work both during the school year and over summer break.
I have always had full confidence that you would find success in college (and your current 4.0 proves I was right), but I worried that you might miss some of the fun stuff in pursuit of perfection and a rush to adulthood. And yes, you are mature beyond your years and fully have your shit together... but you also have found a way to stay balanced. You value your friendships and make time to share downtime in the midst of your busy schedule. You make time to prioritize your relationship with Brayden, making sure there's a mix of quality time and time spent meeting your commitments to school and work. You find time to be involved in social issues that are important to you, and throw yourself into causes that your conscience calls you toward (election 2024 anyone?). And you always make time for your family. I'm so proud of the well-rounded person you are, and hope that you take pride in the choices you make and the priorities you have declared for yourself.
I look forward to seeing what the next year brings in your life. I know you will continue to impress me, and I can't wait to spend even more time together... making art, catching concerts, reading at the beach, and just binging Gilmore Girls, for yet another time.
I love you so very much. Happy birthday, Sophie.
Love,
Mama
