Poor Sophie

Somehow Sophie developed some weird infection in the tip of her right middle finger. No idea how or why, but she started complaining about it on New Years Eve. She said it was sore, and sure enough it was a little bit red and swollen. She remembered bumping it at one point, and I thought maybe she had bruised it. We told her we'd keep an eye on it. By the next day it looked worse, and when the doctor's offices opened on the 2nd, we made an appointment to bring her right in. It looked infected to me, although I couldn't imagine how that had happened.

Sure enough, the doctor took a quick peek and said it was infected and prescribed an antibiotic for her. After a few days of watching the finger get worse and worse, we knew the medication wasn't working and brought her back in. By this point, the end of her finger was swollen to twice it's normal size. They switched her antibiotic, drained the fluid from the finger (not a lot of fun for Sophie), and sent her home for the weekend. Already, after two days on the new medication, the finger is looking so much better. She's much more comfortable now, and I'm glad to see it improving.

What an odd thing to happen. The doctor said that there must have been some small break in the skin - so tiny we wouldn't have ever noticed it - that allowed some kind of bacteria to get in there. She seems to attract the strangest maladies... but luckily she's tough and didn't let it bother her very much!
