Camping Again!

I realize I haven't written much this summer - I guess we've been too busy having fun! We've been on the go a lot - nothing major, but play dates and playground trips and stuff like that. The kids have both been active with the summer reading program at the library and love our trips there. Sophie will often pick out 6 or 7 books from the beginning reading section, then come home and read them all in one sitting. She's ravenous right now - it's awesome to see! 

Anyhow, we took our second camping trip of the summer this weekend. This time, totally solo. Last time we had friends who were seasoned campers to help us along, but this time we were all on our own! We went back to Freeport, but to a different campground this time. We had a beach and a great playground for the kids, and there was an outdoor concert series playing on the first night we were there - and interestingly enough, a friend from high school was in the band. It was fun to catch up a little bit and sit back on the lawn in the fresh summer air and listen to some great music while the kids played their hearts out on the jungle gyms. 

We had an extraordinarily hot couple of days. If we were cold when we camped in June, this trip more than made up for it. On our second day, it was so stiflingly hot, we actually took a little trip into town to get an ice cream, walk around LLBean and enjoy the air conditioning. While we were out driving, the temperature read 103. That's some toasty camping weather! 

But even with the heat, we all really enjoyed ourselves. We got out really early one morning for a little walk around the point. We did a lot of swimming later in the afternoon when the tide was in. We got a lot of time in on the playground. And we enjoyed cooking together and relaxing around the campfire in the evening. The kids were both really big helpers and again had a great time. I think we've decided that we'll invest in more camping gear for next year now that we know we've tried it a couple of times and all really want to keep going. I love that the kids will have camping memories when they look back on their childhoods - it's just such nice quality family time. I'm already looking forward to going again, even if it isn't until next year.
