Sophie had her final blood draw and a follow-up chest x-ray on Monday morning. I could see myself that the x-ray was not quite normal looking yet, but it was certainly better than when she left the hospital. The doctors warned us that the x-rays would probably continue to look abnormal for some time while she continues to heal.
This morning we got the call from the doctor who has been following her through her recovery. Her lab work came back perfect, showing no signs of infection left. She said that the x-ray was much improved over the last one she had. She will be scheduling Sophie for one last chest x-ray in a couple of months to just be certain that everything resolves eventually, but as of right now it was as she had expected it to look. The very bottom of the right lung is still a bit cloudy looking - it could be a small amount of remaining fluid, or just inflammation of the tissue - there's no real way to be certain, but it's normal and part of the healing process.
So Sophie is now officially done with this whole ordeal. She won't need any more medications or appointments or blood work, which is a relief to her. There's just that one last x-ray over the summer, but it can be done right here in our town at the local clinic and the results sent to the hospital.
It feels amazing to say that she is really better now. Looking back, it's hard to believe everything she went through. We're so lucky to have such a strong girl, and so thrilled to have her back to normal again!
